Colonial Status / Region Status
The status of the region, varying from Unknown to National.
The various status are:
Terra Incognita (Uncharted Land)
Displayed as a blank space on map, only colonial leaders can penetrate it.
Unclaimed Land
A region belonging to no one or to a tribal nation. Nobody has any Colonial Penetration there (CP)
Influenced Territory: Sphere of Influence (SOI)
You have CP but no special status.
You gain Prestige Points from having Colonial territories in your SOIs. The amount received is modified by a coefficient starting at 35% if you are just influencing the territory to 100% if it is under Formal Colony level.
Protectorate
You have 30 + % of CP AND you performed a 'Claim Region' mission, which was not contested by another nation. Here only you can create some buildings and some belonging to others nations can even be removed.
Colony (aka Formal Colony)
You have 50% % CP and this was a protectorate and you performed a 'Create Colony Status' mission OR you jump directly from Influenced Territory to Colony. Give you access to new building and options.
Dominions
You have 95% % CP and you declare a dominion in the Colonial Area (must have been in Formal Colony status before)
National Region
You reach 100% CP and perform an 'Assimilate' mission. You then switch the region to 'National Region'.
Special: Other Non National
A region which is not colonial but not national to you. Russia owning part of Poland has such types of region. CP is thus 101.
Benefits and drawbacks of Colonial territories
Starting with the Protectorate level, a colonial area will give benefits - and drawbacks, to the owning nation.
CP reduction of others
Starting with Protectorate level, the Colonial Penetrations of others nations in the regions you control will start to diminish every turn (more rapidly if you are in Colony status, even more in Dominions). The maximum left over points that can be kept will also be lower and lower as the colonial status of the area progresses. Beware, this can trigger a crisis with the other nation, if her holdings were significant.
State fundings overheads
Starting at Protectorate level, Colonial territories will cost state funds every turn to the nation (unless disorganized), this represents the cost of the colonial administration. The cost is calculated for a 50% development level, but a higher development level in the colonial regions will reduce this cost, up to -50%. Similarly, a very low development level will raise this cost, up to 50%.
Force Pool unlocking
Colonial territories at Protectorate or higher level will unlock force pools to the owning nation (if planned by the setup).
[Note: in the DB, the area of recruitments of colonial units must be a colonial area UID, not another area UID - make more sense too]
Colonial Market
Begining at the Protectorate level, the colonial regions will be included into the colonial market of the nation.
Removal of others buildings
Many colonial buildings of others nations will be removed in the colonial territory, if under Protectorate or higher. It depends of each building, but for example Foreign Trading Posts will be removed when the status is Formal Colony or above.
Colonial Initiatives
It is possible that the local governor of a colony will take by himself an initiative, like recruiting a native troop, rounding up some free supplies, or even establishing a bush school or dispensary!
