One of my favorite aspects of command is that in a way you can write the AI for friendly units yourself in each scenario. When you go about creating missions and assigning platforms to those missions, you can customize how said units will act while executing your orders. Say you have an area designated for a MigCAP. You can assign 24 F-15s to this mission and they can all go at once, or tell them to keep 1/3 of the aircraft in flight at any given time. You can also decide if they should investigate contacts outside their patrol area or not. And when they will use active sensors, if only in the patrol area, at all times, or not at all. On strike missions you can designate certain units as A/A or SEAD escorts. In this way you decide how the AI will perform as you attempt to achieve your scenario objectives.
You can also take another step up the chain of command and assign a whole airbase or carrier to a certain mission, and then the AI will decide which units to use from those bases or CVs to prosecute the mission you've assigned. Using refernce points to designate a large area of ocean for an ASuW patrol and assign a CV to that mission. It will send out aircraft to search the area and then strike aircraft will sortie when a target is found and identified (if you so choose, you can tell them to engage unknown targets as well if it's fairly certain in your mind that no civilian units are in the area). Then you can assign the FFG's and DDG's in your CVTF to a seperate ASW mission. They will then use their sensors and on board helicopters to execute an ASW patrol, automatically engaging any submerged contacts.
Multiple sides with differing postures (friendly/neutral/unfreindly/hostile) and different EMCONs for each side are built quickly and easily in the editor. Then all there is to do is place units, assign missions for the different sides, and off you go into your own scenario. Each mission has the option to be scrubbed if the human player takes that side, allowing you to build in an AI plan for each force and still allow the player ultimate flexibility when they want to play the same mission from different sides. And this allows you to keep a couple missions, but not the whole AI plan, in order to give the player a hint as to where some of those sneaky subs might be.
I do sound the part of an ultimate Command fanboy, and it's the truth, but this sim is just plain awesome! I would like to see a demo for those on the fence, but even if one is released it will not do the full game justice. Watch some youtube vids to get a feel for what you'll be getting for your money, but I am certain no one will feel cheated after the amount of good gaming they get out of Command.
